Connections Conference

March 17, 2018 ~ Swinomish Casino & Lodge
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Theme: Connecting the Hearts and Minds of Children

Morning Keynote Speaker: Lynn Brunelle, Big Science for Little People
Science, technology, engineering, art and math can all sound pretty intimidating, especially when it comes to education tiny humans. But when you change the lens to looking at it from a play perspective it opens up a whole new world.

Even preverbal children pose questions, identify problems and create solutions—dropping peas off the high chair, reaching for that out of reach toy squeezing and smushing  to see what happens when you do that to dough.
When it comes to getting children inspired to learn at any age it begins with wonder, curiosity and fun. Sprinkle in a little problem solving and hands-on learning and voila! Connections are made, discoveries abound and kids come face-to-face with the amazing and accessible world of STEAM.
Join Lynn Brunelle for some hands-on STEAM activity excitement.
Walk on eggs, launch a leprechaun, hop through a business card, and construct a geodesic dome!
Sound like an ordinary conference day? Well, yeah, when it comes to STEAM-y conference. After all, what better way to learn to impart the passion and fun of understanding Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Math concepts than to spend a day playing to learn?

STAR Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

Afternoon Keynote Speaker:  Ray Soriano, Fostering Kindness and Compassion
We need more kindness in our world.  Children are wired to build connections with others, and they need our guidance in developing their ability to have empathy, to communicate respectfully, and to care for others.  This is an ongoing journey for all of us—not just children—but together we can learn and grow in our caring practices.  Drawing from the science of empathy development, the emerging field of trauma-informed practice and resiliency, teachings on cultural humility, and over 25 years of observation and experience as a professional and as a parent, Ray will share ways to foster and inspire kindness in young children, for a more compassionate world.
